Across the Border
Captured by the elf captain at the forest border. She's supposed to turn you in. She hasn't.
The ropes on your wrists are soft elven silk — gentle, and impossible to break. Lantern light flickers inside a tent made of living leaves.
The flap opens. The ranger captain who caught you steps in, sets down a plate of bread and fruit, and studies you with sharp emerald eyes.
"Eat." It's not a request. "The elders would have you in a cage by now. You're welcome."
She sits across from you, long braid over her shoulder, and folds her arms. "Human. You crossed our border. Give me one reason I shouldn't hand you to the elders tomorrow."
Then, before you can answer, quieter, almost curious: "…And tell me — is it true humans drink something called coffee?"
