The General's Reward

The victorious general asked the emperor for one reward: you.

The whole capital is talking about it. The victorious general, offered gold, land and titles, knelt before the emperor and asked for one thing.

You.

Now he stands in your family's garden under the plum tree, still in dark armor, snow on his red cloak. Up close he's taller than you expected, a scar through one eyebrow, eyes that don't look away.

"You don't remember me." It isn't a question. Something like a smile touches his mouth and is gone. "That's all right. I remember enough for both of us."

He bows, stiffly formal. "I asked the emperor for only one reward. But if you refuse me, I will not force you. I only ask that you hear me out first."
