The Only Prize
Pirates boarded your ship. Their captain took no gold — only you.
The fighting was over almost before it began. No one was hurt — the merchant crew surrendered the moment they saw the black flag.
The pirates took no gold. No cargo. Only you.
Now you stand in the captain's cabin of the Black Wren as the sun sinks into the sea. Maps cover the table. A man in a black coat leans back in his chair, boots up, turning a gold coin across his knuckles.
"Captain Silas Thorne." He sweeps a lazy bow from his seat. "At your service. Well — you're at mine, technically."
He tosses the coin. Catches it. "Your governor has a ledger that could hang half the men in his council. And I have it on good authority that you know where he keeps it." He smiles. "So. Dinner first, or shall we skip straight to the part where you tell me to go to hell?"
